Oman Visa for Canadian Citizens: Free Entry and E-Visa
Canadian passport holders can fly into Oman without arranging a visa for stays of up to 14 days, provided they can show a confirmed hotel booking, a return ticket, health insurance and enough money for the trip. Those 14 days cannot be extended once you land. If your plans run past two weeks, or you would rather have everything settled before leaving Canada, you can start your Oman visa application and travel on a tourist e-visa instead.
What Canadians need to show for the 14-day free entry
Oman's Foreign Ministry places Canada in the first of its two visa-exemption groups, so no advance approval is involved. The conditions are set out in the Foreign Ministry's entry-visa rules, and an officer can ask for any of them at the airport. Keep the paperwork in your hand luggage rather than in a checked bag.
- Passport: valid for at least six months, counted from the day you arrive.
- Ticket: a return or onward flight.
- Hotel: a confirmed reservation covering your stay.
- Insurance: health cover for the trip.
- Funds: enough money to cover your costs in Oman. The rules publish no fixed figure.
A spouse and children travelling with you receive the same facility even when they carry other passports, which helps mixed-nationality families. If your group holds passports from several countries, ask our visa support team to confirm each person's route before you book flights.
Two limits deserve your attention. The stay ends at 14 days, and the ministry states that it cannot be extended or converted into a residence visa. Anyone planning to work, study or settle in Oman needs a different route arranged before arrival.
Trips longer than 14 days: choosing the right e-visa
Past the two-week mark, a tourist e-visa is the route. Our application service offers Canadians a 10-day and a 30-day single-entry visa, and the current price and processing time for each sit on its visa card, so you see them before committing to anything.
| Your plan | What fits |
|---|---|
| Up to 14 days, hotel and return flight booked | Visa-free entry, with nothing to apply for |
| Ten days or fewer | The free entry already covers it, and a 10-day e-visa gives you less time than the free stay |
| 15 to 30 days in one stay | The 30-day single-entry e-visa |
| Muscat plus a Khareef stay in Salalah | A 30-day e-visa, approved before you fly |
| Staying with relatives or friends instead of a hotel | A conversation with our team before you book |
| Several separate visits within a year | A one-year multiple-entry e-visa, discussed first |
| More than 30 days | A 30-day e-visa, then an extension requested before it expires |
The 30-day visa allows a stay of up to 30 days from entry and has to be used within the validity window shown on its card. Both e-visa options are single-entry, so leaving Oman uses the visa up. Musandam is the classic trap: it sits apart from the rest of the country, and reaching it by road from Muscat crosses UAE territory. A drive there counts as leaving and re-entering, so plan it around your entry limit.
Because the free entry already gives Canadians 14 days, the 10-day e-visa rarely adds anything for a Canadian passport. If you think your circumstances are the exception, ask before paying.
Frequent visitors sometimes look at the one-year multiple-entry e-visa, which allows stays of up to 30 days per visit. It is not among the cards shown for Canada, so speak to our team about whether it can be arranged in your case.
Three Canadian trips and the paperwork each one needs
Ten days around Muscat
A couple flying from Toronto for ten days, with a hotel booked for every night and travel insurance in place, sits comfortably inside the free 14-day entry. They carry printed bookings, check the six months remaining on their passports and arrive with nothing to apply for. Their flight home leaves comfortably before day fourteen.
Three weeks with the Khareef season in the south
Plan a week in Muscat and two weeks in Salalah and you are past 14 days. A 30-day single-entry e-visa approved before departure covers the whole trip with room for a delay. Booking accommodation in both cities before you apply keeps the dates on the form consistent with your travel plans.
A month with a friend who lives in Oman
Visiting a friend who lives in Oman for a month, or longer, is a natural fit for the 30-day e-visa for Canadian passport holders. The application form lets you give your host's Oman resident card details in place of a hotel booking. If the visit grows longer, an extension can be requested from inside Oman, provided it is done before the visa runs out.
Permanent residents, dual citizens and other passports
Oman looks at the passport you hand over, not at where you live. A Canadian permanent resident who holds another country's passport follows the rule for that passport. Oman's second exemption group, which includes India, Egypt, Mexico and Vietnam, gets the free 14 days only when the traveller holds residence or a valid visa for Canada, the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, a Schengen country or Japan, or lives in a Gulf state in an approved profession. Canadian status can therefore help, but only for those specific passports. If your passport appears on neither list, you need a visa before you travel.
Dual nationality needs its own care. Oman does not recognise it, and anyone who also holds Omani nationality, including children of an Omani father, enters and leaves on the Omani passport. For any other dual citizen, whichever passport you present sets the rule, so use the same one for booking flights, applying for a visa and crossing the border.
Flying in from the United States, the United Kingdom or the Gulf
Many Canadians live abroad, and some assume their current address changes the entry rule. It does not. A Canadian passport places you in the first group whichever airport you board at. What changes is the practical side: accommodation and insurance have to cover the Oman leg of the trip, and airlines check entry eligibility before boarding, so carry the same proof at check-in that you would show on arrival. A connection through Dubai, Doha or another hub does not alter the rules either.
Combining Oman with another Gulf country
Canadians often pair Oman with a stopover in the UAE or Qatar. Each country applies its own entry rules, and days spent in one do not count towards the stay allowed in another. Your Oman allowance begins when you enter Oman. Keep the hotel and insurance proof for the Oman portion easy to find, and confirm the other country's requirements separately rather than assuming they match.
Applying for the e-visa, step by step
- Choose Canada as your nationality and your departure country on the form, then pick the 30-day visa or another option that matches your dates.
- Enter your details exactly as they appear on your passport. Small spelling differences are a common reason for delays.
- Upload a clear copy of the passport photo page and a colour photograph. Black and white photos are not accepted, and nothing on the passport image should be covered.
- Add your accommodation and travel details, or your host's resident card details if you are staying with someone in Oman.
- Pay online. Oman eVisa sends the approved e-visa by email, and you can check your visa status at any time.
After approval, print the e-visa and keep a digital copy as well. Airlines and immigration officers may ask to see it, and a mismatch between the visa and your passport details can stop you at the check-in desk.
Standard handling follows the timeline shown on your visa card, and additional checks or incomplete documents can lengthen it, so apply well before your flight. Express handling may be available for eligible cases. The final decision belongs to Omani immigration, and no service can promise approval.
Timing your bookings around the visa
Choose flights and accommodation you can change until an approval arrives, particularly on the e-visa route. Check that your hotel confirmation shows your name, the property and the dates, because that document does the work of proving where you will stay. If a short trip is turning into a longer one, decide before you fly: the free entry cannot be stretched, while an e-visa is built for the longer stay.
If you need more time in Oman
The free 14-day entry cannot be extended. A 30-day e-visa can generally be extended once, and the request has to go in before the visa expires. Rules for other visa types differ, so confirm yours before relying on an extension. Eligibility also depends on the visa you entered on and your current immigration status, which means a traveller who arrived visa-free cannot use an extension to add time. If you hold a 30-day e-visa and expect to run over, review extension options early. Staying past your permitted date brings daily fines and can complicate later visits.
Families and children on Canadian passports
Every traveller needs a passport of their own with six months remaining, and that includes children. On the e-visa route each person has a separate application, and the same applies to extensions: nobody's request is covered by someone else's. A child with one Canadian parent and one parent from elsewhere should be checked against the passport the child will actually travel on. When one parent travels alone with the children, or grandparents take them, read Canada's official guidance on children and travel before booking, and keep any supporting letters with the passports.
Passport details that cause trouble at Omani immigration
- Validity: six months must remain on the passport, not just enough days for the trip.
- Israeli travel history: Canada's official travel advice reports that Canadians have been refused entry to Oman with an Israeli visa or border stamp in their passports, or with Egyptian or Jordanian border stamps issued at crossings next to Israel.
- Sex marker: the same advice says Omani authorities may deny entry to passports showing an X in the sex field.
- Renewed passports: an e-visa is linked to the passport it was issued for. If you renew after approval, contact us before flying.
- Prescription medication: some medicines that are ordinary in Canada, such as codeine, are restricted in Oman. Carry them in original containers with your prescription.
Final checks before you leave Canada
- Your passport expires at least six months after the day you land.
- The return or onward ticket is saved on your phone as well as printed.
- A hotel confirmation, or your host's details, covers every night in Oman.
- The insurance policy document is easy to open and names Oman as a covered destination.
- You can show enough money for the trip, whether by card or cash.
- On the e-visa route, the approved visa is printed, saved offline and matches the name in your passport.
Help before and during the trip
You do not need to visit an Omani embassy or consulate for a tourist visa, because applications are handled online. Once you are in Oman, the Consulate of Canada in Muscat may offer limited passport services, and the Government of Canada's Oman travel advice lists its current contact details and lets you register your trip.
For questions about your own itinerary, our support team can go through your dates, your passport and your accommodation and point you to the right route, including the free entry when that is all you need. Have your passport details, travel dates and accommodation to hand when you get in touch. With those, the team can tell you quickly whether the free entry covers you or whether an e-visa makes sense. Some answers also sit in our common questions on Oman visas.
